Germany is the third largest industrial power in the world after the USA and Japan. Germany has the largest national economy in Europe and ranks third in world nominal GDP.
40% of German industry is involved in manufacturing, such as the automotive industry, electrical engineering, steel, iron, chemicals, optics, pharmaceuticals, textiles and plastics.
German workers were simply willing to work fewer hours because they knew it would keep them in their jobs. They were all the more willing to do so because of the stronger bond that exists between workers and employers compared to many other countries.
