How to become a well-skilled mechanical design engineer? How to get the basics?
There are some things you need to do before you become a successful person -
1. Rigorous subject knowledge: Keep reading about your basics from year 2 and year 3 even if you are in your senior year. It will help. If you have good basic subject knowledge, your interviews will be impressive and you will be able to appreciate the details of machine design, materials and related information. Try to learn the standards used in the industry such as ASME, ASTM, ISO. Be very strong in engineering graphics and machine design. If your information set is large, you will only be considered a resource person.
2. Develop interest in CAD and simulation tools: Emphasize learning a few CAD related tools such as CATIA V5, Solidworks, Pro - E, Unigraphics. You can invest money in lean software and try to get certified. You can even try to do small projects yourself with CAD and analysis software. Your resume will be strong. If you can learn any Analysis and simulation tool such as Ansys, Matlab, it will be very useful.
3. Get started with the industry: You don't need to be with MNCs and big companies with big packages at the start of your career. If you manage to get one, that's fine, but don't be discouraged if you don't get placed in MNC or any well-known company. It gives you the freedom and authority to think and innovate in your own way, often starting with small firms. Your ideas are always welcomed in such companies. But you must start working and only then will you begin to become familiar with real life engineering problems; these problems will have far fewer inputs and assumptions than your book problems.
4. Start working for your personal development: The number of mechanical engineers is increasing day by day. Thus, employers do not have difficulty in finding candidates for the job. What separates the good from the bad is how they carry themselves. Work on your speaking skills and try to develop a friendly attitude towards people. If you can handle conversations in interviews with skill, employers find it impressive. Keep yourself updated with general information and current events. If you can learn any foreign language, especially german, this will help you in the future. These are just a few things I can list that helped me become a design engineer too.
